They happen when the protective cuticle has been stripped away from the ends of hair fibers. Split ends are more likely to develop in dry or brittle hair, and typical causes of damage include excessive dying or vigorous brushing.

Once the hair cuticle is removed, it is impossible to replace. Typically the hair splits into two or three strands, and can be as long or two to three centimeters in length. The best treatment is to cut off the split end of the damaged fiber.

But you necessarily have to go to the salon every week to keep your split ends in check. In the sixties and seventies, woman used to burn off their split ends themselves! Ouch! sure agree that a little excessive. There are easier ways to get rid of your dead ends before they split further... DIY (do-it-yourself) hair trims. be afraid, everyone does it!

Supermodels who openly take the snip between salon appointments include Natasha Vojnovic, Giselle Bundchen (of Dior advertisement fame), and Liya Kebede. In a recent Vogue interview, Sam McKnight, hairstylist to the stars, said all for people doing their own hair. It shows confidence and individuality. You can loose dry ends, add layers, even do a whole haircut yourself, although this is not for the fainthearted.

These DIY hair trimming tips are for woman who are happy with their hair - picture perfect hair; for those who need a re-style, but simply want to freshen things up with a sort of look. If you are in any doubt, leave it for the professionals!

To remove split ends:

Take small sections of hair and carefully twist them in a gentle downward motion.
Any split ends will automatically stick out.

Carefully snip into the twist with sharp scissors. cut right through; just cut into the thickness to remove the damaged cuticles and give a natural layered effect.

Be careful to cut roughly the same amount from each twist.

Stylish Updo with a Twist

This hairstyle has seen me through business class presentations, mid- outings in sundresses and casual in jeans and sweatshirts. It is a great style with a unique twist!

To replicate this relatively easy hairstyle, gather these materials:

6 to 12 mini-claw clips (Or, failing that, lots of bobby pins!)

Elastic Band / Ponytail holder

Brush and Comb

A hand mirror (So you can check out your style as you create it.)

Styling gel (Spray gel works best.) or Hairspray
(Note: If you do not already have these items, it is not necessary to go out and purchase them. Simply get creative and improvise!)

Step 1: Remove excess water from your hair. Hair should be damp, not drenched.

Step 2: Using brush or comb, pull hair back and up, into a smooth, high ponytail and securely fasten.

Step 3: Pull a small section of hair away from the ponytail and twist whichever way is more natural/comfortable. Fasten the twist to your head with one of the clips.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 - fasten each twist so that they start to hide the elastic band. By the time you are finished, a ring of twists should have concealed the band.

Step 5: Arrange the twists however you like them best Feel free to experiment with the dynamics of the hairstyle. Try fastening the twists closer to the elastic band, or considerable farther away from it. Add more twists or try the style with fewer, thicker twists. You can create many different styles out of this single, basic technique.

Step 6: The ends of the twists should peek out from the clips. You can easily alter the length of these ends by merely changing the position of each mini-clip. For longer ends peeking out-a wilder style-rearrange the clips with more hair outside of the twist, just sticking out where the clip meets your head.

Step 7: Once you are pleased with the result, lightly spray the twists and the ends.

This style can be flirty and fun, or professional and sedate, depending on how you manipulate the twists and clips. Play around, have fun with the style and the many varied end results you can create in minutes!

Crimping Clinic

What is crimping?

Modern crimping is a hair styling technique that has been around since the early 1970s. Just like a straightening or curling a crimping iron uses heat to cause a temporary change to the hair's appearance and texture.iron, Crimping adds texture, and the ability to do a completely new look to your hair. This is not a permanent style - you can wash it out in just one shampoo! The key to crimping is experimenting to find the look that is best with your face shape and current hairstyle.

Should I crimp?

The ideal face shape to support crimping is small and oval, however, any face shape can take advantage of crimping if it is applied wisely. Some face shapes can support an entire head of crimping, some shapes do best with only partial crimping. Crimping can be done to just the bottom layer of the hair, the top layer of the hair or all of the hair.

Crimping of the bangs will add texture and fullness to the front of your face while crimping of a topknot or ponytail will add height. Why not try experimenting, and crimping multiple ponytails, for example? Remember, if your hair is thin, crimping will give it body. If you have thick hair, it will make it look

With crimping, the you go, the better! If you want more volume, use a volume enhancing shampoo and conditioner and apply a little volume gel to the roots of your hair before you begin to blow dry.

How to Crimp

If you have analyzed your face shape, the condition of your hair and have figured out a great way to add crimping to your "look" follow these steps:

Wash your hair with a mild shampoo.

Use a good moisturizing conditioner.

Finish with a cold water rinse to seal the hair shaft.

Blot your hair as dry as possible with a towel.

Detangle.

Apply a good heat protection spray.

Blow dry your hair on the coolest setting.

When hair is totally dry, use the crimping iron on your hair, small sections at a time.

Apply the crimping iron to the hair for only as long as the crimping manual states (models generally a few seconds)

When the time is up remove the crimping irons from your hair. And then, hey wow! Check out your funky new style!

To crimp, or not to crimp?

If your hair is in good condition, then why not give crimping a try? But make sure you crimp your hair too often (as in every day) as it will cause damage in the long run. If you are going to crimp, make sure that your hair is 100% dry before you begin, and always use a heat protective spray. Since crimping may cause some breakage to the hair, it is best to stop the crimp just above the ends of your hair.

If your hair is in bad condition, and is prone to snap or break, think twice. Even with the aid of a heat protecting hair product, your hair will sustain damage, and its condition will deteriorate still further. Also, forget that crimping might not suit your face shape. Get an honest opining from your girlfriends or your Mom before you go out to the mall!

Where can I buy crimping irons?

You can buy a crimping iron at most beauty supply stores, retail stores and discount outlets like Best Buy, K-Mart and Walmart. But before you make an investment in a brand new crimping iron, you may want to get a professional hairstylist to fix your hair in crimps to see if you like it!

Curls Galore

Before digging out the spongy pink curlers or running to your stylist for a hasty perm, check out these effective alternatives for an evening of uncustomary curls!

Curling Iron:

Inexpensive, relatively user-friendly and quick for minor touch-ups, this device can give you a glam look with a few minutes investment. If youre donning only a partial head of curly locks, a curling iron could be just the tool you need for an immediate response to your need of a few well-placed curls.

Glamorize your up-do with a curling iron by emphasizing your style with a few loose spiral curls around your face or one or two seductively sweeping along the back of your neck. Creating these curls can be a quick and easy process, but dont forget to spritz them with a little hairspray, or else they may not last the entire evening!

Another common use for a curling iron is tending to your ends. Tuck them under or flip them out a bit wildly, but you wont get the same results with a set of hot rollers! A curling iron is versatile enough to curl precisely the strands that you want curled, in whichever manner you wish to achieve. Even if you wish to curl more than a few small sections of hair, a curling iron is capable of curling your entire head as well.

Time Involved: Curling Iron use may take anywhere from 5 minutes or less to 45 minutes or more, depending on styles involvement.

Hot Rollers:

Just a touch more expensive than the curling iron, hot rollers can achieve a full head of flawless curls, typically in under an hour. Hot rollers generally have a small amount of wax inside that is heated when the set is plugged into an electrical outlet. When the curlers are ready for use, the color may change color so that you know to begin applying them.

Forget about fighting with the curling iron and trying to decide which way you want the curl to spiral. Instead, enjoy the remarkably easy process with hot rollers-once you have fastened the curlers in your hair, your hair will all curl simultaneously!

It is still a good idea to use some styling products such as a non-sticky hairspray or gel to retain the shape of the curls. (Curls formed by hot rollers tend to last considerably longer for me than those I create with a curling iron, as my hair is typically resistant to curling in general.)

Tip for Hot Rollers: Try to wash your hair the night before you want to employ the hot rollers. Sometimes very clean, sleek hair tends to resist curling.

Time Involved: Hot Rollers may take about 10 minutes to warm up and anywhere from 10-20 minutes to apply, and about 15 minutes to set. (Color of curler will revert back to original color to indicate that the curl has set.) Add additional time as necessary for styling your locks if you intend to use barrettes, bobby pins or other adornments and styling products.

Curling Iron Versus Hot Rollers:

Both beauty appliances require time to heat up, but hot rollers may require a few extra minutes.

Hot rollers are very easy to use when styling the whole head or a section, but count on them to curl your ends out or under. Leave that to the curling iron!

Color of hot rollers indicates when they are ready to use and when your curls have set.

Curling iron gives great flexibility for choosing between loose spirals and tight ringlets, but you can always brush out your curls formed by hot rollers to achieve the style you desire.

Curling irons are much easier to transport when traveling and staying in a hotel or other location away from home.

Hot rollers save more time if going for a full head of curls. Success rate for curls enduring the entire evening may also be better.

Both devices are useful in and of themselves-the best advice for you is to try them both and see which you like the best!

Hair Extensions

Have you noticed the amount of celebrities Ravishing Ravens who have all of a sudden grown long, flowing locks? The key to their fabulous hair is the clever use of hair extensions, carefully blended to match exactly with their own hair.
Hair extensions offer instant volume haute hair for limp tresses hair SOS or emergency relief from a disastrous haircut.
You can expect extensions to last up to three months.

Caring for hair extensions is a bit different from caring for natural hair. Some things that you should know.

Use a soft bristle brush and brush your hair from the bottom and gently work your way up.

Gently tie your hair up while sleeping.

Do not color your own hair extentions at home.

To prevent tangling, run your fingers through the braid extensions.

Don't spray your extensions with conditioners or any silicone based products as they can cause the braids to slip.

How long can extensions be? Ellen Pompeo
You can have any length you want up to about 26"-30". Anything longer than this puts extra weight on your scalp which may lead to uneven pressure and damage to your own hair. The best looking hair extensions for average height women are usually around 22" or less.

How much are they?
It's all relative. Someone will do it for you for a few hundred dollars while others will charge thousands. Shop around, but remember that to get the best possible product you will pay a premium price. However, your hair will look great, it will last and you will feel terrific!

Can I wear my hair up? Heidi Klum
Of course, the hair extensions should not be applied any lower than the base of your scalp (approximately at the level of the middle of your ears) and so your hair under this point covers the extensions while you wear it in pigtails, ponytails - see Reese Witherspoon, french braids etc.

Does it hurt?
No! If it hurts get out of there! The extensions artist should braid the tracks firmly but comfortably. The tension should be even all over your head with no points pulling or hurting. Do not put up with someone telling you it has to be really tight in order to be secure. Pulling your hair out is not the idea. You will know you have something on your head for the first day or two but after that you won't even feel that they are there.

Air Dry Your Hair

If you often blow dry and process your hair with flat irons, curling irons or hot rollers your hair is probably ready for a break. All that heat and processing can leave your hair dry, brittle and very damaged.

Give your hair a much needed break and let it air dry naturally. Think of it as a vacation for your hair.

The first step for air drying is to use hair products for air drying instead of blow drying; a good absorbent towel is also a plus. An absorbent towel will suck up excess moisture and speed up dry time. A good leave in conditioner will keep your hair from becoming frizzy.

Use the absorbent towel to remove excess moisture then gently blot your hair dry. Do not rub your hair. Rubbing will damage the strands and cause frizzy hair and split ends. You want to keep the hair shafts as smooth as possible.

If your hair tends to become flat or too frizzy from air drying you can fluff it by finger combing or pull it back with big clips. I like to pull my sides back in two large clips to add volume to my hair while it is drying. Once it is dry I pull out the clips and have natural volume and waves.

Use products suitable for the texture of your hair. Fine hair works best with mousses and sprays, curly and wavy hair respond best to gels and creams. Find a great product suitable for your hair type that also helps combat frizz, this will help keep your hair under control while air drying.

After you find products that work well for your hair and you get the hang or air drying you will love it. Every time I air dry my hair it has a completely different texture than when I blow dry it. It is softer and so much shinier. Air drying is a vacation for your hair and a styling option for you. It gives you a chance to try a different style and it gives your hair a break from over processing.

Air Dry Your Hair

If you often blow dry and process your hair with flat irons, curling irons or hot rollers your hair is probably ready for a break. Perhaps the most common souvenir taken home from a week or stay in the Caribbean is a new hairstyle!

Many women and some men choose to don the tiny braids that often reveal their most recent escape from corporate life. Braided hairstyles are common in a number of other tropical locations, including Jamaica and countless other island destinations.

Offers to braid hair may be plentiful, depending on the time of day and location of the vacation. Women skilled in many styles of creative braiding may wander the beaches in search of their next clients, asking all those whom they pass if they would care for some braids.

In Nassau, the going rate per braid capped at about $3. Vacationers could request as few or as many braids as they wished, in a number of fashions. Those offering the braids often were willing to negotiate on the price in order to secure more business for themselves, so the cost of having entire head braided may not be relative to having a few single braids done.

Once the number of desired braids has been determined, one should then select the braiding style. Common styles seen in The Bahamas include dozens of straight micro-braids - woven from roots to ends, cornrows fastened with beads at the crown, and cornrows ending in long braids.

Beads or tiny seashells may adorn braids and cornrows in the desired colors of the wearer. Popular styles seen this February consisted of cornrows ending at the crown in two alternating colors and long, micro-braids fastened off with a few beads on each one.

Some important hair and scalp care is necessary for those donning the stylish braids.
Dabbing a bit of sunblock on the scalp is critical to preventing sunburn.
When shampooing, wearers of the braids should not shampoo the braids directly, but rather the scalp, allowing the suds to soak down the braids.
To keep braids in great condition longer, a light coat of conditioner on each one should do just the trick.

When removing braids, the best method involves coating braids with conditioner and gently unraveling them one by one. A warm shower with normal shampoo and conditioner products should restore hair to its usual texture and appearance.

Combination Hair

There are many different types of hair. There are thick types and there are fine types of hair. There are curly ones and straight-falling ones. Some hair types are more prone to the accumulation of sebum (the natural oils that our skin secretes) than others, while some hair types are just naturally dry. There are various ways of taking care of hair according to its various types.
But what if your hair happens to be a combination type of hair? What if your hair is very oily near the scalp but has the tendency to be dry to the point of brittleness as the strands reach the ends? How do you take care of hair like that?

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to care for the combination type of hair. With the appropriate use of the right products, you can prevent damage to your hair, protect it, keep it healthy and even enhance its beauty. So how do you effectively care for the combination type of hair?

It all starts with the proper washing of the hair. In shampooing, never use hot water to wet your hair. Hair strands are susceptible to extreme heat and hot water will only damage it. Instead, just use lukewarm water.

Be choosy with the products that you use for your hair. If you have the combination type hair, avoid using shampoos formulated for oily hair. It might worsen the condition of the dry tips of your locks. Instead, opt for shampoos specially made for normal hair.

Do not use too much shampoo to wash your hair. Just a dollop the size of a quarter will do. Apply the shampoo directly on the scalp and just let the suds flow to the ends of your hair. Never apply the shampoo directly to the tips because the shampoo will wash off the oil that your hair tips need so much. If you must, just scoop some suds from the top of your head and use it to wash your tips. Never overclean your ends and be careful in handling them. Rinse the shampoo off carefully and thoroughly until it is not slippery any longer.

After shampooing the hair, apply a rinse-off conditioner. Just as you should never apply shampoo directly to the tips of your hair, you should never apply conditioner directly to your scalp either. The moisturizing agents in the conditioner will cause the scalp to produce too much oil. Instead, concentrate the application of the conditioner to the tips of your hair strands, and then rinse your hair thoroughly, this time with cold water to lock in the moisture and to discourage your hair from secreting too much oil.

For added TLC for your combination type hair, indulge in deep conditioning treatment once a week. Apply moisturizing conditioner to the dry parts of your hair, wrap it with a towel and let it be for a couple of hours before washing it off completely. You can substitute olive oil for commercial conditioner if you wish. Also, make it a habit to have your hair trimmed once every two months to get rid of your brittle ends.

The combination type of hair need not be a hair care nightmare. All it needs to keep healthy and beautiful is the know-how for its proper care.

Hair Color

just something so sexy about being a woman. Buying new lingerie, donning a new look with a great makeover, trying out a new hairstyle or hair all need a change sometimes, and what better to change than the color of our hair?
Dyeing our hair a new shade shifts us into a new sense of being, gives us a new persona to assume and fulfill. We can be the boisterous blonde we never were, the seductive brunette, the electric redhead or the mysterious ebony-haired beauty. A hairstyle we may like may not look good on us, and mainly because that haircut does not flatter the shape of our face.

A woman with a round face should wear her hair in such a way that it lessens the width of her face and should go for hairstyles that add length. In contrast, hairstyles that add length should be avoided by women with long faces, and these women should go for hairdos that add width to the face.

Read more on best hairdos for your face.

But whatever the shape a face may have, there are indeed a few haircuts that would look good on her regardless. This all-around hairstyle is so simple and versatile that it would look good not just on any type of face, but also on any kind of occasion.

What are the elements of this all-around haircut that goes well with any shape of the face?
There are two elements to the all-around hairstyle.

The first element is layering. The layers of the hair should act as arrows that direct the eyes to whoever is looking at you to the best features of your face, such as the eyes, the lips or the cheekbones. So, the layers of your hair should be done to the front of the face, rather than in the back. However, avoid having your layers done too short; hair layers should not fall above the eye or above the earlobes.

The second element is length. Try to keep the length of your hair to just about your shoulders. Long hair that falls to the middle of the back and cut without any shape or layers should be left to teenage girls.

But if you want to wear your hair long, wear it with layers around your face. Also, have the length at the back cut to a round shape, or a V-shape. Long hair cut straight and without any shape can make a woman look either too old or too juvenile, but long hair that is done with layers and with the ends shaped at the back can make you look sophisticated and sexy.

The all-around haircut is perfect for any face, regardless of the shape. Why you try it and see for yourself?

Hair Style Tips

We all know that eating a balanced diet is essential for healthy hair, but there are certain foods that will cause your hair to grow even faster than it would with your everyday balanced diet. Eating foods that are rich in protein, as well as foods that are rich in iron, will not only keep your hair shiny and full of life, but will also allow it to grow at its fastest possible rate.

As hair is essentially made up of protein, it makes sense that a diet that contains lots of protein would be necessary to achieve maximum growth. Protein-rich foods include chicken, fish, cheese and eggs, or if you're a vegan, grains, beans, seeds and nuts. As for foods rich in iron, these include red meat, green leafy vegetables (especially spinach), nuts, eggs, and soy products like tofu and soy milk. The beauty of many of these foods is that their iron and protein contents often overlap - that is, foods that are high in iron will be high in protein, and vice versa.

It's also important to actually EAT these foods, as opposed to merely supplementing them with vitamins. Nutrient absorption from food has been proven many times over to be far more effective than the nutrient absorption from vitamins, so if you don't actually eat the foods, you'll be doing yourself and your hair a disservice. Thankfully the foods that are high in protein and iron are quite diverse, so if you don't like the taste of one thing, you can always replace it with another.

The food that I've personally had the most success with, when it comes to increasing my hair's growth rate, is sushi. Like many women I go through 'food phases' - that is, favouring one type of food heavily for a few weeks or months, before moving onto something else. Since a fabulous sushi restaurant opened up in my neighbourhood a few months ago, I've been eating the stuff practically every day, and the results have been quite extraordinary! Even my boyfriend commented on how long my hair had become, and he's not normally the type to notice such things. Of course, sushi is extremely high in protein - being largely made of rice, seaweed, and raw fish - so this is what would have caused the steep increase in my hair's growth rate.

Remember that the most important element of your diet is that it's a balanced one, but by incorporating a greater proportion of both protein-rich and iron-rich foods, you'll be allowing your tresses to grow as fast as they possibly can. And when it comes to reaching your hair growth goals, the faster you get there, the better!

18-year-old Twilight star Kristen Stewart is most recognisable as the beautiful brunette Bella Swan, but she has played with a variety of hair colours over the years, mostly switching them up for movie roles. Personally I think she looks best as a brunette, as it's more suited to her skin tone, but she still manages to pull off the light and dark blonde, as well as the auburn hues, in high style. Here are some great photos of Kristen Stewart's hair.

Anyone who says that hair is nothing but strands of dead protein growing out of our scalps does not understand its importance, both to the woman it is a part of, and the society she inhabits. Hair not only conveys our sense of style to the world, it can be a manifestation of our inner emotional state.
Dr David Castle, co-author of Living With Your Looks, says that "a woman's hair carries a strong emotional and cultural investment. It can express life, attractiveness, femininity, sexuality, health and personality, to name just some aspects."

When a woman goes through a period of emotional hardship - whether that be the death of a family member, the breakup of a relationship, or countless other life-changing scenarios - she can be tempted to drastically alter her appearance, and often does so by cutting or colouring her hair. "There is a very strong heritage in our society, in fact, many human societies, on the augmentation of appearance for people's mental state," says Castle.

In other words, altering our appearance, by getting a drastic haircut, for example, can be a symbolic way of healing our inner states. Think of when Britney Spears shaved her head - she had hit rock bottom, both in her career and her personal life. She was not serving some vain purpose by making a change in her image; she was externalising her inner pain and using the removal of her hair as a means of symbolic reinvention.

Of course, any changes in appearance that are made will only give temporary relief to emotional pain: and sometimes, if we regret the change, can make it that much worse. By being aware that you may feel compelled to make large changes to your hair when emotional crises occur, you may be able to avoid a hair disaster before it happens. Any release that we feel as a result of hair alterations will only be temporary - it is the heart, and not our hair, that we must attend to first.

19-year-old singing sensation Taylor Swift is truly making her mark in the world of country music. The New York Times described her as being "one of pop's finest songwriters, country's foremost pragmatist and more in touch with her inner life than most adults." She's also been noted for her unique sense of style, and this, of course, includes her hair - her ethereal blonde curls are rarely straightened and she seems to prefer wearing it loose, though it also looks fabulous in an updo. Here are some great photos of Taylor Swift's hair.

Ashlee Simpson has been a redhead for so long, I'd almost forgotten how gorgeous she looks with blonde hair. She debuted a classic California blonde hue yesterday, while shopping in Beverly Hills.

Salon Style

If it's a new look you want without having 'the chop' try changing your fringe! Wispy fringes are flattering to most face shapes. If you usually wear a fringe try gelling it back or wearing your parting on a different side. You'll be amazed how much this can change your look.

Hair too thick? Get your stylist to feather or razor cut, it will add texture + shape without drastic changes to length or style.
Long, straight hair will benefit from using a paddle brush during blow-drying. Use the concentrator nozzle fairly close to the brush and finish with a gloss spray to boost shine.

Remember - you don't need to loose length when having layers. Layers give movement and interest to any style. Long hair looks stunning with a few subtle layers, adding height, and can help limp hair look more voluminous.

If you're the modern, creative type you'll no doubt be using gallons of products to achieve the look. But remember, most things benefit from a rest from time to time. So next time you've a gap in your social diary, try using one of the de-tox products to remove product build-up, follow with a good, conditioner and just enjoy that 'natural-look' for a while. Who knows you may decide it suits you!

Highlights are probably the best way to liven up mousy hair. Go for lots of very fine highlights for the most subtle look and for the choice of colour do take your stylists advice. The overall colour will depend on several factors including original colours & condition for example. Your stylist will have a good idea of what's best for you.

Hair Tips

GREASY HAIR

Try to avoid daily washing. The sebaceous glands are overstimulated, secreting more grease onto the hair. This creates a vicious circle where the more you wash is the greasier it becomes.

Another problem with regular washing is that although the roots are greasy the rest of your hair is stripped of oil and the ends become dry and brittle. Use a mild ph-balanced shampoo and wash hair without rubbing the scalp too much. Only apply conditioner to the mid and ends rather than at the roots.

Watch your diet. Oily and fatty foods can contribute to greasy skin and scalp. Best of all is to use those days when you're at home to give your hair a rest from
daily washing. Try using a children's shampoo as these are often mild enough for greasy hair.

DRY HAIR

Dry, coarse and brittle hair needs to be nourished from within; a conditioner that just rinses out won't do the job. Use an intensive moisturising shampoo which will cleanse without excessive rubbing (which will damage the hair more) and follow with a hot oil conditioner. Heat opens up the hair cuticles allowing the moisturiser to penetrate the hair shaft giving it suppleness, bounce and movement. Mousse on dry hair will make it look dull, use a blow drying or thickening lotion instead.

FRIZZY HAIR

Keep your hair well conditioned with a rich moisturising product. The hairstyle is also important. If your hair is very frizzy you don't want too many layers. Have a few longish ones that will allow your hair to flow. Always use a diffuser when blowdrying which will help control the frizz but will not remove all the body.

GREY HAIR

If you only have a little grey a semi-permanent colour wash (stays for six to eight washes) will cover it. For more than 30 per cent grey then a quasi colour covers grey whilst keeping a natural look. When you go grey in patches, a permanent tint or a foil and tone technique - where highlights are woven around the top and crown and a semi-permanent colour is put through the rest of the hair - is the only way to cover up. This creates warmth and depth throughout the hair.

HAIR LOSS
New mums often find their hair thins quite a lot, particularly around the crown area, after the birth. This is quite normal and don't worry about it. Stress can cause hair loss as well. Eventually your hair will return to normal. Meanwhile you can follow the tips for thin hair.

HAIR BODY

It is essential you have a good cut, just below jaw length is recommended with a few layers using clever graduation. Colour enhancing can also help to create the illusion of body and blow-drying technique is very important. Start from the crown and take long sweeping sections. Use a wide-toothed vent brush parallel to the hair line an lift the hair up and towards the crown putting a slight crease at the root so you put the lift in at the roots before styling the rest. Use a few large Velcro rollers around the crown when the hair is still warm from blow-drying; this can give added lift. Put them in, spray with hairspray and then dry for five minutes with a hairdryer before allowing them to cool down properly.

Hair Colour

The more of your hair you colour the more noticeable the regrowth will be, particularly when going blonder, and the more colour you apply the greater the damage. For that blonde look a few carefully chosen highlights, focusing the lighter ones around the face will give a natural look without obvious regrowth. When colouring light hair remember dye will always come out darker than shown on the box so if, for example, you want dark brown hair choose a mid-brown colour.

Hair Products

Styling products such as serums can contain silicon, which build up on the hair and need regular cleansing. When possible leave off the styling products to give your hair a rest. Change shampoos occasionally, especially when using moisture rich shampoos. Try switching to milder ph balanced shampoos.

Hair Growth

There is no way to speed up the growth of hair but you can keep it healthy. Regular trimming every six to eight weeks will keep thin ends in check. Watch your diet as well - make sure you get sufficient vitamins and minerals especially B12 and Iron.

SPLIT ENDS

Once your hair has split the damage is done and will require cutting so protect it by keeping it supple and moisturised. Use a leave-in conditioner.

Blow drying the hair can damage it so always use a nozzell on your hairdryer concentrating on the hair shaft. If the damage has already been done a serum applied to split ends will help disguise them and can help protect the hair when applying direct heat such as from curling tongs or heated rollers. The only real solution is to cut the offending ends off.
